Scaling, also known as teeth cleaning, can help us to maintain good oral hygiene, but some netizens questioned “the gap between teeth becomes larger after teeth scaling” and attached a photo of a “▲” black hole formed between two teeth to ask everyone, “Is this normal?”
Gaps between teeth have always existed, but because of the accumulation of stones, the illusion of no gaps will occur. So it is certainly not true to say scaling causes dark triangle!
Here are the explanation to some of the most frequently answered questions by our patients and public!
Question 1. Will scaling damage tooth enamel?
The enamel on our teeth is not as fragile as you might think; it is 3 to 4 times harder than bone. Teeth scaling uses ultrasonic vibration scaling equipment to loosen and peel calculus from the teeth along the junctions to achieve the removal effect. Generally, instruments used properly will not cause damage to tooth enamel.
Question 2. Will our teeth become sensitive and soft after scaling?
After scaling, the calculus accumulated on the surface of the tooth is removed, and the tooth originally covered by the calculus is exposed, resulting in temporary sensitivity. If the tooth does not have gum recession or periodontal problems, tooth sensitivity will disappear about 1 to 2 weeks after the scaling. During this period, try to avoid contact with foods that are too cold, too hot, or high in sugar, and remember to brush teeth and floss daily to maintain a healthy environment for our teeth.
Question 3. Will teeth become whiter after scaling?
Scaling does not necessarily make the teeth whiter. It removes the tartar accumulated on the tooth surface. If the teeth are stained due to smoking or diet, or the teeth themselves are yellowish in color, scaling will not make the teeth whiter. If you need whitening, consult your dentist to evaluate for sandblasting or other suitable whitening treatment.
Question 4. Will teeth gaps become wider after scaling?
In fact, gaps between teeth have always existed, but due to the accumulation of dental calculus, there will be an illusion that there are no gaps between teeth. The calculus is removed during scaling. When the tongue moves, there is no longer any obstruction by the calculus and it can directly touch the gap between the teeth. Therefore, you will feel that the gap between the teeth has become larger after cleaning.
